We Have Liftoff

“Whenever I set off on any sort of journey I fall off the radar. No one knows where I am. At the point I departed from? Or at the point I’m headed to”

— Olga Tokarczuk, “Everywhere and Nowhere,” Flights

* * *

Welcome to this summer’s book and podcast featuring Flights by Olga Tokarczuk. As we set off on our journey together, we want to share our itinerary for this summer, as well as help you get introduced to Olga Tokarczuk and Flights

Our itinerary: What’s on this summer and when?

Podcast episodes
Episodes for the five-part companion podcast will drop on Thursdays over the course of July and August. This Thursday, we’ll release the trailer for the series, and the first episode will come out July 23. The episode will arrive via the Summer Book Club newsletter and in your favorite podcast apps—Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.

We’ll also use Thursdays as our main communication day, so we keep everything to one email per week (reserving the right to send announcements and reminders as needed. :))

Recommendation: Whitelist our book club website domain and sending address in your email provider—bookclub.behavioralscientist.org, newsletter@bookclub.behavioralscientist.org. This will ensure communications arrive in your inbox. (Otherwise you might find it in promotions or spam.)

Live group discussions
We’ve slated live group discussions for the weeks of August 3 and August 24. To make sure we offer days and times that work for different time zones, we need your help! Please complete this very brief Typeform to let us know your preferences.

Our hope is that if you want to participate in the live group discussions, you’ll be able to make at least one of the weeks. The final, celebratory live event will also be a chance to discuss and interact with fellow members.

Asynchronous group discussions
We will host a Behavioral Scientist Reads WhatsApp community to bring together members for asynchronous discussion as we read Flights together. More info on the WhatsApp group and how to join will come out this Thursday with the podcast trailer.

Reading together: Target page #/section
In the schedule below, you’ll find a target page #/section that will help us create a shared reading experience. We’ll use this target to avoid spoilers—podcasts won’t give away key information beyond the target section. We’ll also use it to coordinate group discussions—focusing on key sections we’ve read up to that point.

Collaborative Memory Map
We’re excited to bring everyone together via the Memory Map where we’ll share the places and travels that have changed us. You’re probably wondering what a Memory Map is. Have no fear, we’ll share more details when we release it along with the first or second podcast episode—we’re in the process of exploring the different tech options for making this happen. (If you have thoughts/expertise, get in touch!)
